Rocca di Frassinello

Dr. Paolo Panerai, der Besitzer des Top-Chianti-Gutes "Castellare", kannte die Familie Rothschild seit den 80er Jahren, als er mit ihnen zusammen in Italien Weintechnologie vertrieb. Baron Eric de Rothschild seinerseits war öfters in der Maremma, der Heimat seiner Frau Beatrice, zu Besuch. So traf man sich eines Abends im famosen Ristorante Gambero Rosso, und die Idee eines gemeinsamen Weinguts entstand: "Rocca di Frassinello".

Das Land dafür fanden Panerai und Rothschild in der noch jungen DOC "Monteregio di Massa Marittima", genau zwischen den mittlerweile berühmten Appellationen "Bolgheri" und "Scansano". Hier, auf einem geologischen Ausläufer der Böden von Montalcino und Chianti, aber in ungleich wärmerem Klima, herrschen paradiesische Bedingungen für Korkeichen, Wildschweine, duftende Macchia – und für Wein. Auf 80 Hektaren wurden Sangioveto, Cabernet und Merlot gepflanzt, die nach dem Vorbild französischer Châteaux drei Weine ergeben: den Drittwein "Poggio alla Guardia", den Zweitwein "Le Sughere di Frasinello" und den "vin grand", "Rocca di Frassinello".
Paolo Panerai und Baron Eric de Rothschild, dem die Verantwortung für die Domaines Barons de Rothschild (u.a. Châteaux Lafite und L’Evangile) obliegt, haben im Jahr 2000 die ersten Reben ihres gemeinsamen Weingutes in der Maremma gepflanzt. Es wird der Anfang einer langen Erfolgsgeschichte gewesen sein. Die beiden Herren haben nebst ihren Mitteln vor allem einen riesigen Fundus an Wein-Kow-How zusammen getragen. Als önologischer Berater fungiert der legendäre Christian Le Sommer von Château Lafite.
Dieses zeigt sich darin, dass sie Land auf Anhöhen und Hanglagen erworben haben statt in der warmen und eher feuchten Ebene wie andere berühmte Weinunternehmer, die in letzter Zeit nach Bolgheri und in die flachen Gebiete der Maremma gezogen sind. Die Rebe profitiert am Hang nicht nur von einer besseren Thermik, sondern auch von trockenerem Untergrund: zwei enorme Vorteile, wenn Qualität das Ziel ist.
Und daran lässt Dottore Panerai keine Zweifel: "La nostra cantina deve essere la più bella d’Italia ed i nostri vini tra i migliori del mondo." Der Qualitätsanspruch ist so hoch, dass Stararchitekt Renzo Piano dem Wein schon mal ein Denkmal gesetzt hat: Mitten in den Reben duckt sich auf der Ostseite des Poggio Ventoso die Winery "Rocca di Frassinello" an den Hang, gekrönt von einem Turm, der die Farbe der Erde aufnimmt und den Himmel einfängt.
